SSC CHSL Syllabus

SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit candidates for 10+2 level posts such as Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Data Entry Operator (DEO) and Postal/Sorting Assistants in various ministries, departments and offices of the Government of India. The examination is held online in three tiers.

Examination Pattern

Tier I

Computer Based Examination (objective type). Each question carries 2 marks with a penalty of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.

Tier II

Computer Based Examination conducted in three sections, each having two modules. There is a penalty of 1 mark for each wrong answer in the objective sections.

Detailed Syllabus

General Intelligence & Reasoning

Both verbal and non-verbal reasoning: semantic analogy, symbolic/number analogy, figural analogy, semantic and figural classification, semantic/number/figural series, problem solving, word building, coding and decoding, numerical operations, symbolic operations, space orientation, Venn diagrams, drawing inferences, punched hole/pattern folding and unfolding, figural pattern completion, embedded figures, critical thinking, and emotional and social intelligence.

General Awareness

Awareness of the environment around society and its application, current events, and matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect. Coverage spans India and its neighbouring countries — History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Indian Constitution, and Scientific Research.

Quantitative Aptitude

Arithmetic: number systems, fundamental arithmetical operations (percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work). Algebra: basic algebraic identities and elementary surds, graphs of linear equations. Geometry: triangles, congruence and similarity, circles and their chords and tangents. Mensuration: triangle, quadrilaterals, regular polygons, circle, prism, sphere, hemisphere, and cone. Trigonometry & Statistics: trigonometric ratios, heights and distances, histogram, frequency polygon, bar diagram and pie chart.

English Language

Spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, spellings/detecting misspelt words, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/passive voice, conversion of direct/indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts, shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passage, and comprehension passage.

Note: SSC revises the CHSL scheme of examination periodically. Negative marking applies (0.50 marks in Tier I; 1 mark per wrong answer in Tier II objective sections). Always confirm the latest tiers, marks and skill-test requirements with the official SSC notification before applying.
