Cabinet approves 8 railway multitracking projects worth Rs 20,804 crore

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on 9 September 2026 approved eight railway multitracking projects worth about Rs 20,804 crore across nine states, adding roughly 1,196 km to the network. Five of them (Rs 10,021 crore, about 540 km) are in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.

  • Other package: 3 projects, about 656 km, in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh
  • Target completion of the southern projects: 2029-30
